The Basilica of Maxentius was nearly completed when Constantine defeated him and became sole emperor. Constantine completed the Basilica making only one major change. The first plan was for the entrance to be on the longitudinal axis -- through the arches to the right of the floorplan. Constantine changed the entrance to the side (bottom of plan) facing the Sacra Via.
A gigantic statue of Constantine filled the alcove. Parts of this statue can be seen in the Capitoline Museum.
