Lacus Curtius

lapis-niger.jpg (38487 bytes)

The Lacus is one of the oldest sites in the Forum and one of the few places that pre-imperial materials are readily visible. The paving stones are dated to the time of Sulla. The origins of the site are explained in several different ways. By imperial times it was regarded as the place where citizens tossed a coin to ensure the safety of the emperor. In all times it appears to have had some religious significance as a connection with the powers of theunderworld.
