The Lapis Niger, the Black Stones, was one of the most ancient and revered monuments in the Forum Romanum. The site was thought to mark the burial site of Romulus and Remus and, indeed, ancient ruins with archaic writing dating to around 500 BC are found directly below the dark pavings. The visible site consists of dark stone pavings which may date from the time of Sulla, according to some, or as late as Maxentius, according to others.. The black marble is surrounded by a white marble curb of an even later date.
