Augustus' house on the brow of the Palatine Hill

This site has been confirmed as the house of the first emperor, Augustus. The entrance is at the top in this illustration. Immediately inside there is a courtyard with three large rooms opening off it. The original frescos are still on the walls of these rooms.

Contemporary accounts describe Augustus' house as modest by the standards of aristocratic Rome.
